Hey, I know we were supposed to visit the pub tonight, but I've got this wicked hard History 301 research paper due on Monday that I COMPLETELY forgot about. It's gotta be on some local history shit and I have NO IDEA what I'm going to do... Agh.
Hope your internship is going well. We'll catch up soon.

<i>Hood River Historical Society
Hood River, Oregon</i>
-----------------
Do you wish to [[accept|go]] the assignment, or do you wish to [[decline|end1]] your boss's wishes?
[[Go Back.|Check your email.]]Erik has been your best friend since the third grade and is your current roommate at (link:"Myers University")[Myers University, a uni founded in 1854 by Andreas Myers just west of Portland].
[[Go Back.|E1]]<img src="https://redrazzle.neocities.org/bloomingdale1.JPG" height=110% width=110%></img>
-----
As you can see, I'm working on the magazine spread for our upcoming exhibition. I know you typically pull scans and photos from the archives, but I want you to go out in the field and get a fisthand "scoop" on Bloomingdale. From what we know, the lost Canzan Mine is also nearby.
The land is protected by the state, but I've been granted access by the state to visit the land for educational and archival purposes. As I'm going to be out of town for the next few weeks, I would like to extend this assignment to you.
If you accept, you have three days to get all of the information that you can.
----
[[Go Back.|E2]]You've been working as an intern at the Hood River Historical Society since the beginning of the semester. Mainly, you examine archival documents and organize them. It sounds fairly boring- and sometimes is quite dull- but looking at old dusty posters from the "Wild West" does have a bit of an appeal.
Lately, you've been doing just that. The historical society is going to be putting on an exhibition focusing on a nearby former mining town/current ghost town by the name of Bloomington.
The town was founded in 1865 by James Canzan and his brother, Jakob, after a deposit of gold was found nearby. Tucked away, this tiny area was a hushed secret that made a few men astoundingly wealthy...
[[Go Back.|E2]]You write out a reply to Cheryl and tell her of your intent to work on the assignment. You also decide to invite Erik, your history major roommate, along. He'll be interning with you next year, and after confirming it with Cheryl, she agrees that two heads may be better than one.
Your work begins [[tomorrow]].
(set: $choice to 0)You make up some excuse about your great aunt, Bertha, falling down the stairs of her yacht. Again. Your boss probably doesn't believe you, but you get off the project.
The Bloomingdale exhibition ran smoothly, but you can't help but wonder if there had been more to explore.
I guess now you'll never know...

<b> Day 1 </b>
The sun is warm against your skin, despite the chilliness of the air around you. You and Erik are filling up your backpacks before you head out towards Bloomingdale for the day. You are almost done, but have a tiny bit of space left.
Your Inventory:
Water
Bagged Lunch
A Pocketknife
A Smartphone
Jacket
Gloves
Notebook
A Pen
Camera
A Map
You can only fit three of the following in your pack. What are you going to take?
(link: "Extra Water")[(Set: $choice to $choice +1)(set: $water to 1)]
(link: "Headlamp")[(Set: $choice to $choice +1)(set: $headlamp to 1)]

(link:"Extra Pens")[(Set: $choice to $choice +1)(set: $pens to 1)]
{(live: 500ms)[(if: $choice > 2)[(goto: "tomorrowgo")]]}You and Erik load up the car to begin your trek. Your drive is about forty minutes to the southeast of Pueblo. Despite not being as mountainous as the western part of the state, this area is still quite rocky. The trees disappear, and the desert looms before you.
On your drive, you listen to Erik's (link:"strange playlist.")[strange playlist of Nickelback, Danny Sexbang, gospel, and...dubstep polka?]
[[Take a nap]] to spare yourself from Erik's wacked out music tastes.
[[Look out the window]] and try to ignore your pal's antics. <img src="https://redrazzle.neocities.org/roadside1.jpg" height=90% width=110%></img>
As you leave the Columbia River Gorge area, the coniferous forests begin to dwindle in favor of more barren landscapes. You watch intently as this change occurs.
After a few (link: "minutes")[minutes of Erik's horrible (link: "singing")[wailing]], you notice a peculiar looking hill off to the side of the road. It could be high hopes or a lack of sleep, but it almost looks like there are parts of an old shack about halfway up the steep incline.
You could [[stop]] to take a look at whatever might be up there. The slope is fairly gradual and the walk would not be challenging.
You could [[take a nap|Take a nap]] to better drone out the awful singing of your partner.
You exit the car, stretching your tight muscles. The view here, in the middle of...nowhere, really, is quite astounding. From the dead end of the road, you can see Prospector's Stream (original, right?) to your left, along with what might've been an old house. Up back towards the right is the location of the old "Main Street" and the heart of the tiny town.
<img src="https://redrazzle.neocities.org/shack2.jpg" height=90% width=110%></img>
Go down towards the [[small shack|Walk towards a small shack]] to see what clues it may contain.
Look along the [[stream's|look at stream]] banks for any washed up artifacts.
[[Inspect]] the area where the old "Main St." was.
[[Look at your map.|map]]
"Hey man, let's stop here for a sec," you say, pointing to your new destination. "Just for a couple minutes."
----
You take your time investigating the tiny outcrop, although not much new information is scored. There was, in fact, a tiny shack up there but it didn't seem to be from the correct era. Among the ruins were a few (link: "unique items.")[unique items: crushed beer cans, a McDonald's bag, one sock, and a green oversized sweater. ]
According to your GPS, your final stopping point is still a bit farther down the road. While you <i>do</i> have three days to get the "inside scoop", you don't want to waste too much time.
[[Continue driving.|Look around.]]
(set: $stop to 1)You make the slightly tedious trek down to the dilapitated building along the stream. Once you get closer, you realize just how...unstable it looks.
"Hm, I can already tell that this will be great for my local history paper," Erik muses. "You want to go [[inside|Carefully walk inside.]], or do you want to stay [[outside|Look around outside.]]? I'll do whatever you don't wanna do," he says with an excited glint in his eyes.
You see two nearly toppled buildings and a pile of rubble. According to your map, these buildings are the Saloon/Town Hall, Post Office, and Sheriff's Station.
[[Explore.|Sheriff's Station]]
Look at the [[map|map2]]. <center><iframe src="https://redrazzle.neocities.org/bloomingdale.html" height="500" width="500"></iframe>
(link: "Back")[(goto: "Look around.")]
You and Erik quickly realize that not much is left in the Saloon, aside from a bunch of empty, broken bottles. You quickly move on to the [[Post Office]]. You both sift through the rubble, hoping to find something worth saving- or, better yet, revealing the location of the lost mine.
Your lucky break occurs soon after: the Postmaster's logs. As it so happens, the gentleman running the Post Office was also involved with shipping the gold here to the U.S. Mint in Carson City, Nevada.
The "gold mine" the Historical Society wanted was here: directions to the south west, where the mysterious mine supposedly was.
---
Time for a hike... [[tomorrow|Day22]]You carefully make your way through bits of rubble- all that's left of this structure. As you try to avoid a few shards of antique glass, you hear a shout.
"Check this out!" Erik calls from your right. He triumphantly plucks a medium sized chest from the wreckage, somehow abandoned after all these years. The peeling leather and brittleness of the container make it quite simple to open, recealing a pile of arrest records and other documents, nearly one hundred and fifty years old.
As you look through the documents, the mine remains unfound. However, these documents will still be a treasure to the Historical Society.
Next, you head towards the [[Saloon]]. "Outside," you reply.
You make your way along the slippery bank and inspect the exterior of the shack. As you skirt along the edge of the stream, a glint catches your eye further down the bank.
You should really stay close to the building, since it looks as if a gust of wind could blow it down at any second. But that glint... That could definitely be an artifact.
----
[[Stay close]] to Erik and take some photos while you wait.
Take a moment to investigate the glint in the [[stream]]. <img src=" https://redrazzle.neocities.org/decode.JPG" height=90% width=110%></img>
----
"You know I love a good mystery," Erik boasts, "so I've already figured out that the second cluster says "the woods."
{
(if: $pens is 1)[(Link: "Got extra pens? You've got an answer.")["To the west of my home. A quick path down the woods and just on the other side of the stream will lead me back to the opening of the deposit."]]
}
Have you figured it out yet? <i>Good</i>, because sunlight is fading and it's time for you two to head home.
----
Are you ready for [[Day 2|2note]]?
"The decoded answer is obviously west!" you declare excitedly.
You head down through the rocky land, confident that you were going to find that-
<i>Oh!</i> Suddenly, your foot is no longer on solid ground but //sticking through the ceiling!//
"Erik! Check //this// out!"
You both carefully kneel at the very edge of the slim hole; the beast below threatening to devour you both. You figure that you could somehow dig the hole a bit bigger and get a better look inside... Yet, that sounds pretty dangerous.
---
Try to find a way [[down|Go down.]] into the hole.
[[Call for backup.]]The path starts out fine at first, but soon you find yourself climbing sheer rock faces, trying to make it to the Lost Canzan Mine. Your dream becomes a nightmare with one fateful step...
You slide down the sheer dropoff, your last memory Erik's voice screaming your name before darkness consumes you.
---
Looks like the mine wasn't the only thing lost today.
[[The End.]] You and Erik trudge through what looks like an odd juxtaposition of pacific northwoods and rugged southwest. And, while cool, this isn't what you are looking for.
You go back to your starting point and try again.
Go [[West.|minepath]]
Go [[South.|badpath1]] <img src="https://redrazzle.neocities.org/stream3.jpg" height=90% width=110%></img>
You and Erik wander along the bank for a bit, snapping photos as you go.
Yet, as you keep moving, something in the water catches your eye. It seems to be metallic, but... You cannot be sure. You pause, and Erik continues on ahead of you. He's concentrating- probably making mental notes for his "local history paper" he has to write.
Perching yourself on the bank carefully, you stretch yourself until you can <i>just</i> reach the round, shiny object in the water. Pulling yourself back triumphiantly, you realize that you've got a gold coin in your hands!
"Erik," you call, "check this out!"
Both of you inspect the coin with awe. It's no lost mine yet, but it's still an incredible artifact.
Compared to that discovery, the rest of your river walk pales in comparison.
Where to next?
---
[[Main St.|Inspect]] is calling your name.
The [[small shack|Walk towards a small shack]] near the stream.
[[Look at your map.]]
(set: $coin to 1)Your eyes droop closed as you let go of the world around you, just for a little while...
(live: 3s)["Hey, man, we're here...I think?"
Erik shakes you awake. Through blurred vision, you notice that the GPS is saying that you've arrived at your destination...
[[Look around.]]]<center>You have been logged out.
Feel free to [[log in|Untitled Passage]] again. </center>Eh, the shiny thing is probably nothing, anyway. You'd better make sure your pal stays safe in this dilapitated old structure. You continue to take photos around the outside of the building. Hey, the Historical Society could use some more artsy photos for their archives.
"Come look at this!" Erik suddenly calls, an air of urgency in his voice.
"What is it?" you inquire, entering the tiny shack with him.
Wordlessly, he hands you a journal. A ihnt of excitement flashes in his grey eyes. Upon opening it, you realize that it belonged to an old prospecter. You imagine this artifiact hasn't been read in decades.
There seems to be a secret code in the notebook, sharing the location of the Lost Mine- Well, hopefully anyway.
The two of you set out to work on figuring out what the note says.
----
[[Decode]] the note. You leave Erik behind and take your own mini-adventure.
<img src="https://redrazzle.neocities.org/stream3.jpg" height=90% width=110%></img>
Perching yourself on the bank carefully, you stretch yourself until you can <i>just</i> reach the round, shiny object in the water. Pulling yourself back triumphiantly, you realize that you've got a gold coin in your hands!
You turn back towards the shack to call to Erik, only to see half of the structure [[cave in]].
(set: $coin to 1)"I'll go inside," you say.
Erik proceeds to take photos and explore the surrounding outside area, while you're drawn to a dusty old workspace overlooking the water. On the desk, underneath a pile of debris from the ceiling, you find an old leather journal. Upon opening it, you realize that it belonged to an old prospecter. You imagine this artifiact hasn't been read in decades. You turn the frail pages and see [[a coded message]].
You use the bandages to patch up his head wound well enough to keep him stable until medical help can arrive. Whille you- and his doctors- insist that he stay home and rest, your friend simply laughs and says:
"Well, we always have tomorrow!Let's find some treasure."
----
[[Day 2]]Double-click this passage to edit it.You run over to where Erik was, heart racing. Luckily, he managed to get out of the way of most of the collapse- his only real injury is a gash to his head. Yet, the wound is bleeding profusely.
"I...I don't feel very good," Erik sways.
{(If: $bandages is 1)[(print: "Luckily, [[you have bandages]] and first aid supplies to tend to his head wound.")]
(else:)[(print:"Your friend is beginning to [[bleed out.]]")]}Erik passes out before the ambulance can reach your remote location. Luckily, he manages to survive, but your adventures were cut short. You never did find that mine, but at this point, you're just glad Erik is okay.
Your boss is still pleased with some of the photos that you were able to take, as well as the gold coin you managed to hold onto.

<b> Day 2 </b>
The drive was uneventful, although you and Erik compensated for your lack of concrete evidence by snapping tons and <i>tons</i> of photos of the landscape. Perhaps they can be printed out for the Historical Society's event.
When you arrive at your destination, you both head for the outside of the small building, far too eager to explore any of the other buildings- you are on the heels of the lost Canzan Mine, after all. You can feel it!

You take as many photos as you can before Erik hoists you back up. You did it! Mission accomplished.] (else:)[However, it is too dark to see...What a shame.]]
(else:)[You manage to dig a hole, but you have no way to get down in there. You decide to take a peek by leaning inside, but the ceiling gives way, sending plummetting into darkness...

[[The End.]] Being careful to mark your tracks, you make it back to your car. You call your boss whie Erik eagerly calls his mom. Soon, news channels are interviewing you and a crew is excavating the site. Your Bloomingdale exhibition is a rocking success, putting your historical Society on the map and even scoring you and Erik some wonderful scholarship opportunities.
